VEI Consultants is an Anchorage-based firm that offers professional civil engineering and land surveying services for roads, water and wastewater systems on public and private projects.

We use the latest in computer technology, with 7 fully-equipped computer workstations, an extensive technical library, and sufficient office equipment to produce reports, studies, plans and specifications.  Our field equipment includes a fleet of pickup trucks, survey van, and ATV’s.

The firm has been in operation since 1981 and has worked in communities state-wide—from Yakutat to Anchorage to Barrow.  VEI employs a core staff of 3 professional engineers, a licensed surveyor, drafters and supporting clerical and technical personnel.   There is very little turnover among our employees, which serves to enhance our reputation as a stable and solid engineering company.  Among our repeat clients are the State of Alaska Department of Transportation, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, the Municipality of Anchorage, and oil and oil service companies.  We have also worked for the Cities of Valdez, Homer, Wasilla, Seward, Deering, Seldovia and Kodiak.

Company History

VEI was founded in 1981 in Valdez, Alaska. It was incorporated under the name Valdez Engineering. The firm had three original partners with offices in Valdez and Palmer. In 1985 Valdez Engineering joined forces with Entech Engineers owned by Vern Roelfs and an Eagle River office was added. In the late 1980's Valdez Engineering consolidated its operation to a single office in Anchorage with two partners, Robert Eder and Vern Roelfs. In 2003 Mr. Eder retired to part-time status. In 2020, remaining partner, Vern Roelfs, retired to part-time status and turned operations over to sons Scott Roelfs and Eric Roelfs. VEI's main office is located in Anchorage near the intersection of Bragaw and DeBarr, where it has been for the past 30+ years.

Scott Roelfs, the current President and co-owner, is professionally licensed in Alaska as both a civil and environmental engineer. Eric Roelfs, Vice President and co-owner, is licensed as a professional civil engineer and surveyor-in-training in Alaska. Vern Roelfs continues to actively participate in all of the firm's projects. Vern is dually licensed as a civil eingeer and land surveyor and has more than 40 years of experience, with 39 of those years in Alaska.
